Ancient to the Future
Under the motto Ancient to the Future, they celebrate African-American culture and feed the heritage of experimental jazz with new ideas. Nicole Mitchell is regarded as the leading flautist of her generation, having won many major jazz awards and Downbeat Critics Polls. She is praised for her great sound but also her adventurous spirit as a bandleader and her imagination as a composer.
Improvising cellist Tomeka Reid is one of the younger members of the Art Ensemble of Chicago. Drummer Mike Reed has a special relationship with Amsterdam, as the descendant of an Indo-Dutch family. In addition to well-known composers from Chicago, he has recorded works by Dutch composers such as Guus Janssen, Sean Bergin and Eric Boeren.
